The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) will stop distributing applications for utility assistance on March 31.
The agency administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program in Lewis, Lincoln, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, Shelby and five other counties.
LIHEAP is funded by the federal Department of Health and Human Services and distributed through the Missouri Department of Social Services to groups such as NECAC. The program pays a portion of the utility bills of income-qualifying people.
So far, NECAC has accepted about 12,000 applications since Oct. 1, about 1,500 more than at this time last year.
The amount of assistance varies and is based upon household size, income and fuel type. No utility shut-off notice is required.
