Arrival of Hannibal’s newest piece of fire fighting equipment is due to arrive within the next month. Delivery of the pumper, which was put on order last September, is on schedule, according to Chief Tim Carter.
“We are expecting delivery no later than Aug. 12. The manufacturer has told us to anticipate it anywhere from the end of July to the first part of August,” he said.
The pumper is being built by Alexis Fire Apparatus of Alexis, Ill., which was the lowest of three bidders at $349,376.
“We’ve been going up periodically to Alexis and doing some inspections of the chassis and the body. It’s coming along right on time,” said Carter.
The new pumper will bring features that the Hannibal Fire Department has not had previously.
“It’s a little bit shorter truck. It’s designed to get around the streets and hills a little bit better than any of the equipment we have right now,” said Carter. “It’s also going to be the first rear mount pumps that we have ever attempted to utilize.”
The new truck will replace a 1990 truck now based in Huckleberry Park.
“A truck life expectancy is approximately 20 years in the fire service so when it reaches 20 years old we’ll place that truck into reserve status if we have a replacement,” said Carter.
With a truck going into reserve, another truck now in reserve will become excess equipment.
“Within the next 30 to 60 days we’ll either put it out for bid or the fire board will make a decision as to how we’ll dispose of it,” said Carter.
The new truck will receive much of its equipment from the truck it is replacing.
“There will be some minimal equipment we may purchase to go on the new truck, but pretty much we try to keep everything to par so it will transfer right over,” said Carter.
