Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Taylor, will hold its 59th annual Lord’s Acre Sale, beginning with a good-will offering turkey dinner at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. An auction will begin at 12:30 p.m. All surrounding area community members are welcome to join.
The dinner menu includes baked or deep-fried turkeys, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls, salad and dessert. The auction is one of the most important fundraising events for the church each year; its proceeds will benefit missions and building improvements.
Items for the auction are donated by members and friends of the church and range from produce, dressed meats and canned goods to an array of homemade items including beef jerky, cookies, bread and rolls, cakes, pies and Hungarian butterhorns. Handiwork items such as handmade quilts, jewelry, rag rugs, afghans, fall and Christmas decorations will also be available.
Auctioneers Col. Bill Stauffer, Mike Stauffer, Marcus Stauffer, Chuck Hayes, Susie Gosney and Ralph Griesbaum have volunteered their time for the sale.
The Mount Olivet youth group will host a country store featuring candies, cookies, bars, muffins and other goodies to support their projects throughout the year.
Fifteen percent of proceeds from the sale will benefit missions, and the remainder will be contributed to building improvement and repair.
Chairmen for the 2008 Lord’s Acre Sale are Ralph and Cindy Griesbuam; co-chairs are Jay and Dorothy Hines. The turkey dinner is chaired by Brett and Diane Schrader.
Mount Olivet’s Lord’s Acre Sale was initiated in 1949 by Mrs. Ray Tomlin. Over the years, Mount Olivet has grown from a small church in 1871 with 12 charter members to a membership of over 150. The original church sanctuary is still used and the last redecorating project was completed in 1982. Over the years, classrooms, offices, a library and social hall have been added to the building.
The church is located in Taylor, on Highway 6, a quarter of a mile west of the U.S. 61 junction.
