A Hannibal man accused of animal abuse and neglect will be in court Jan. 5.
Forty-five-year-old Richard L. Shannon turned himself in to Hannibal police Monday morning.
He faces 10 counts of no city dog license, nine counts of animal neglect, one count of animal abuse, four counts of dangerous animals and one count of excessive number of animals.
Officers responded to a report of neglected dogs in the backyard of a home in the 2100 block of Hope Street Nov. 19.
They saw one dead dog that was decaying and got a search warrant for the property. Authorities said they seized nine dogs, eight rabbits, one hedgehog, eight birds, seven rodents and four snakes.
All of the animals were taken to the Northeast Missouri Humane Society shelter in Hannibal.
Shannon’s family has said that the animals were not neglected. The shelter has said the animals were in good health.
Shannon is free on a $2,000 cash bond and an additional $6,500 surety bond.
