Hannibal, MO —

The Father of Waters is about to feel the Power of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
An all-day concert dubbed The Sandbagger’s Ball promises it will be “Fightin’ High Water With High Voltage.”
The event is Saturday at the Y Men’s Pavilion at 100 Hill Street in downtown Hannibal.
Appropriately, the venue is bordered by the city’s floodwall.
“It’s going to be a great time,” promises organizer Brian Yelton. “It’s like a mini-Pointfest or Lollapalooza. I think it’s pretty much unprecedented in the area.”
Gates open at 11 a.m. and the first of eight bands takes the stage at noon. Each will play for about an hour. A multi-group jam session will end the show by 11 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and all ages are welcome. Proceeds will be donated to American Red Cross disaster relief.
Yelton hopes for a crowd of 1,000, but said he’ll ”be satisfied with whatever we get.”
The inspiration was large-scale benefits such as Farm Aid and programs such as “Headbanger’s Ball” on Music Television, Yelton said.
As lead singer of the headlining act, Thru the Ashes, he’s used to thinking up snappy titles, and “Sandbagger’s Ball” came to mind pretty quickly.
“I said ‘That’s pretty catchy,’” Yelton said. “Everybody else thought so, too.”
Yelton, a probation and parole assistant at the Community Supervision Center in Hannibal, was motivated to help the Red Cross after seeing the flooding that hit the region.
“If a person doesn’t have money, they can give of their time,” he said. “This (music) is what I do best, so why not do what I do best?”
Tom Dugger, Red Cross executive director in Northeast Missouri, said the chapter continues to help area flood victims. Staff members will be on hand at Saturday’s concert.
“Brian has really put in a lot of effort to make this happen, and we really appreciate that,” Dugger said.
Yelton has lined up sponsors, gotten city permits and said vendors plan to sell food and concessions. Beer will be sold, but drinkers must have wristbands. Security will be provided.
