Jim Hightower, a syndicated columnist, commentator and author, will be the featured speaker during Saturday night’s 39th annual Democrat Days’ banquet in Hannibal. The announcement was made late Friday afternoon by John Yancey, one of the Democrat Days organizers.
“We’re glad we’ve got even more firepower than we had,” said Yancey. “Everybody is still on board, we’ve just added another round to our arsenal.”
Hightower writes a nationally-syndicated column carried by 75 independent weekly newspapers and other publications. He also writes a monthly newsletter “The Hightower Lowdown,” which has more than 125,000 subscribers. He also writes for The Progressive Populist.
Transportation was a major stumbling block to secure Hightower for the banquet.
“The problem we’ve had is that we couldn’t find anybody who could ferry the man up here. We have now found somebody who can and will, and he’s going to be here and we’re going to have a hoorah,” said Yancey.
Yancey credits Robin Carnahan, Missouri’s secretary of state, with helping land Hightower.
“I think Robin Carnahan had an inside track to his organization and put the state committee next to him. I believe that’s how the accommodation was made,” he said.
As of Thursday event organizers were still working to come up with a speaker for their banquet. An individual with a national reputation had been lined up to speak, but he had to withdraw when a schedule conflict came up.
The banquet, which will take place at the Quality Inn and Suites, will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets remain for the event.
