General Mills has committed $50,000 to help build the Hannibal Higher Education Center. The first $25,000 was given in a check to Affordable Community Education Inc., on July 9, 2009. The decision to make this gift was made by the Community Action Council, which was made up of employees at the General Mills Hannibal Plant. The Council’s decision recognizes the importance of the Moberly Area Community College Hannibal satellite campus to the entire community and as an asset for General Mills and the workers at General Mills.
Lori Dowil, who chairs the Community Action Council, presented the check on behalf of General Mills. Receiving the check was Branson Wood, president of Affordable Community Education. “General Mills has made a wonderful contribution to help in building a community college campus here in Hannibal. General Mills is a wonderful citizen in this community. In addition to being one of our most important businesses and employers, they are committed to this area. General Mills and its employees have helped with many, many things to make this a better community in which to work and live. Their contribution to the Hannibal Higher Education Center is just an example,” said Wood. Also present were Hannibal MACC employees Wendy Johnson, Karen Seward, Charlotte Maddox and Jessica Heintz.
The future home of the MACC Hannibal Area Higher Education Center is at the corner of Highway MM and Shinn Lane in Hannibal, on land donated by Dr. Burton and Dr. Bieniek. ACE has launched a $4 million campaign to establish a permanent community college campus for MACC Hannibal Area Higher Education Center.
MACC has been offering classes in the Hannibal since 2000. Enrollment has continued to increase each semester, and the community college has outgrown its location at 109 Virginia Street, in Hannibal. MACC has relocated to a temporary space at the Hannibal High School Vo-Tech Center.
