Missouri has given a large hog producer two years to clean up an odor problem.
Attorney General Chris Koster has ordered Premium Standard Farms to install odor-control equipment required as part of a 2004 agreement. Penalties will be assessed if the company fails to comply.
Under the settlement, Premium Standard must install barn scrapers and other technology at 48 farms by the end of the year. By next July 31, it must have it in place at 136 barns. By July 31, 2012, all 366 barns must be outfitted.
Non-compliance would bring a $2,000 per-day penalty for each barn that violates the agreement. The penalty would go up to $4,000 after a month if the equipment wasn’t installed and $6,000 a day after two months of non-compliance.
A company spokesman said Premium Standard would spend $7.5 million and meet the deadlines. The company said it already had spent $40 million on environmental safeguards.
The case dated to 1999. Also as part of the agreement, Premium Standard will donate $1 million to school and road projects in Northern Missouri.
