The most unusual pet at the annual pet show Friday in Central Park was brought by Sam Carter, 9, of Oklahoma City, Okla. It resembled a lizard but was actually a “bearded dragon” named Goodie. It was 5 years old.
Another animal not seen at most local pet shows was Molly, a 3-month-old white lamb owned by 6-year-old Sophie and 10-year-old Adam Albright. Their parents, Alisha and Bryan, explained that after moving to rural Hannibal, they got the lamb when it was 2 weeks old.
It is really a good pet, Alisha said, because it “eats all the clover out of our yard” and stays with Sophie and Adam. “She’s like a dog. ... Wherever they are, she is.” She added that their neighbors sing to Sophie, “Sophie had a little lamb.”
A well-trained papillon dog owned by Christa Dowell, 11, of New London, won the prize for best trick, after several other dogs were too nervous to do their tricks. Christa’s dog obeyed several commands, including closing the door of a cage. Christa said it can close the doors at her house.
The best dressed pet was another dog, a toy fox terrier named Daisy. She was dressed like a ballerina and had her toenails painted after arriving at the pet show. Ashlee Shulse, 10, brought her on stage.
Ashlee’s brother, Austin, 11, competed in the same event, best dressed pet, with his two hamsters, Chuckie and Squirt. He had red, white and blue barrettes for their fur.
A cat named Belle won a tie-breaker to be named best cat. The small yellow cat was owned by Allie Sims, 5, of New London.
Jeremy Cooper of Hannibal took home the best dog prize for his Pomeranian greyhound.
The best Tom prize was won by a Pekingese brought on stage by Oliver Meininger, 2, of Hannibal (with help of a family member).
The best Becky contest had no entries, according to Joy McPike, who co-chaired the pet contest with Cheryl Damron. Both represented F & M Bank and Trust Co., which has sponsored the pet show for 39 years. The show had fewer entries than usual, which was blamed on the hot weather.
Many pets were dressed in costumes for the show, such as a St. Louis Cardinal dog named Lucky, Katie Beilsmith brought him and said he was Mark McGwire.
Another was a clown, a miniature schnauzer named Ivy Rose, brought by Maddie Johnson.
A little Chihuahua, Delgoto, was dressed in a tuxedo for the best dog contest, brought by Elaina Hirner, 9.
Both large and small bunny rabbits were in the contest. Before competing, Grace McIntosh was giving her 4-year-old bunny, Cookie, water from a tube.
A bullfrog did not win the contest on Friday, but it still had another chance. It was to compete in the frog jump, which begins at 4:30 p.m. today, July 2, at Tanyard Gardens.
Young children will also be competing in the tricycle races at 11 a.m. today at Tanyard Gardens.
Some also will be in the children’s fun run at 9 a.m. today at the Tom and Huck statue, which is part of the Hannibal Cannibal race at 7 a.m. today (after pre-registration at 5:30 a.m.)
