A dark and rainy Tuesday was made even darker for some in Hannibal by a loss of power shortly after noon.
The Board of Public Works reports that 1,441 of its customers lost electricity at 12:15 p.m. The outage darkened homes and businesses from Indian Mounds to Clinic Road.
This week’s rains had made the ground so soft that it could no longer support a tree in the Stevens Drive area, which fell into a three-phase power line, causing the whole circuit to go out.
“The tree was outside the easement, so it was outside the normal area we’re allowed to trim and cut,” said Heath Hall, the BPW’s director of operations, noting that normal easements range from 15 to 30 feet wide.
The large group of customers were without electricity for 30 minutes. Another 98 customers had to wait an additional 15 minutes for their power to be restored.
“We had to manually turn the circuit back on,” said Hall. “We turned most of it back on within 30 minutes, then we had to remove the tree for the final little bit.”
