The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that on Friday, May 9, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Troop B officers were called to assist the Adair County Sheriff’s Department with a reported shooting incident at 21809 Elmwood Trail in rural Adair County.
Sgt. Brent J. Bernhardt of the state patrol said after officers arrived at the scene and it was secured, the Kirksville Police Department Special Response Team was activated to make entry into the house, and officers discovered a 48-year-old Kirksville resident dead of a single gunshot wound to the chest.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control (Troop B Unit) was called to assist with the investigation. Preliminary information revealed a dispute had occurred between the victim and the resident of 21809 Elmwood Trail prior to the gun being fired.
An autopsy is scheduled today, May 12. The name of the victim was withheld Saturday, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation was ongoing by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and Adair County Sheriff’s Department. They were assisted by the Kirksville Police Department, Adair County coroner and the Adair County prosecuting attorney.
