Another section of new pavement is slated to open by Friday along West Ely Road in Hannibal. While the area will not be open to through traffic, it will make access to homes easier for residents who live along this section of the project.

Another section of new pavement on West Ely Road is slated to open by Friday, but City Engineer Mark Rees warns motorists to not expect the barricades to be removed for through traffic.
“They’ll open that new pavement up all the way to that point, but we won’t be able to drive through. We’ll still have to drive around that Pioneer Trail loop,” he said.
The detour for motorists traveling west on West Ely Road is to take Cherokee Trail, Settlers Trail and Pioneer Trail back to West Ely Road.
The concrete for the new section of road was only poured last Friday.
“That (Friday) would be seven days and the concrete cylinders have already broken strong enough, so we will open it no later than Friday,” said Rees.
Rees realizes how fortunate the contractor, Bleigh Construction, was to get the concrete poured before rain started over the weekend.
“That was very good timing,” he said.
Two new sections of West Ely Road have now been completed.
“That is nice. It does show me good progress,” said Rees. “It would be even nicer to get it all the way down to Pioneer Trail, but we don’t want to test our luck. If it seems like there’s going to be a lot of good weather ahead we’ll attempt it. If not we’ll wait until the spring thaw. It’s all up to Bleigh. That decision should be made in the next week or so.”
Work on West Ely Road began Sept. 21. The entire West Ely project is expected to be finished by the end of September 2010.
