“It was a perfect ending,” said Neta Elder, after watching the movie “Chocolat.” “It was wonderful,” she said of the film, which was screened at the Star Theatre at the conclusion of the Chocolate Extravaganza in downtown Hannibal Saturday evening.
Elder was among seven members of the Red Hatters of Frankford, who had been up and down several streets, trying various types of chocolate treats that were included in the Chocolate Extravaganza.
She was especially excited to receive Bankhead candy at Pudd’N Head, explaining that her home town of Bowling Green has been making Bankhead chocolates for more than 50 years.
Carol Ford’s favorite was the chocolate cookies and dips from the Main Street Kitchen Store. Others in her groups had enjoyed the chocolate-covered strawberries from The Brick Oven, and were excited to receive a chocolate (real) pearl from Ava Goldworks.
They also liked the chocolate bread pudding at The Abbey Rose and the chocolate popcorn from Paddlewheel Popcorn and Candy Company.
The Red Hatters included Linda Willenbrink, Melba Benn, Judy Marshall, Lee Ann Ellis and Catherine Houchins.
Others attending the event favored the cheese from the Badger Cheese Haus. Helen Bunn and Jan Brown of Hannibal were at The Powder Room, where Brown was enjoying her chocolate martini, while Bunn described how much she likes the tomato basil cheese she had purchased.
They also were happy with the mud slide at Kerley’s and the old fashioned chocolate ice cream soda at Becky’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor.
Brown said she “just came back from visiting my son in San Diego and we went to the wine country. I had a chocolate cup of almond wine and I could eat the cup. Then I come back to our little town of Hannibal, and we have the Chocolate Extravaganza.”
One couple was pleasantly surprised to be attending the Chocolate Extravaganza. Bruce and Pat Metzler of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., had been to Branson, Mo., and were spending two days in Hannibal on their return trip. He had visited Hannibal as a child and wanted her to see the museum, cave and other attractions.
She was happy with her chocolate pearl from Ava Goldworks, and after eating at Breadeaux Pizza they planned to visit more of the businesses. To prepare for their Hannibal visit, he said, “we have been listening on our drive, listening to Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn books to give us the flavor.” When they reached town, they found their visit also would be flavored with chocolate.
