Plainville, IL —

Stone’s Prairie Market is part of a working homestead. The business is located in Plainville, Ill., which was called Stone’s Prairie between 1856 through 1889. Samuel Stone came to this area in 1822, and eventually founded the town. The store’s operators are currently working with the descendents of Samuel Stone to make a complete history of Stone’s Prairie available. Some the descendents live in Palmyra.
Kevin and Krista Manard operate the business. “We became interested in this type of lifestyle because of severe food allergies in our family.  It led to us to organic gardening, cooking everything from scratch, using herbs, and generally exploring time tested ways of doing things.  We want to extend these ideas to our store,” Krista said. “We will soon be offering classes in nutrition and homesteading skills.”
The market carries many types of nutritional supplements. “We carry a variety of brands and have many NOW FOODS products.   We also special order items for customers. We can mail order per request.”
In addition, they sell all-natural pet supplies like organic shampoos and treats, and pet supplements.
In addition, a bakery sells fresh bread, cinnamon rolls, coffee cakes, and a variety of other items. Most of the ingredients we use are organic and many of the recipes are heritage recipes. “All of our recipes are made from scratch,” Krista said. “One of our house specialties is Blackberry Danish.”
On Wednesdays they  bake all gluten-free foods.
