What could be the final section of concrete pavement poured this year on West Ely Road in Hannibal is due to happen Friday.
“Two days ago they poured the curb and then tomorrow (Friday) they’re going to pour Phase 2 of the main pavement. That’s looking pretty good,” said Mark Rees, city engineer. “They were out there working on it today (Thursday). They poured a couple of driveway entrances and were getting their base ready and all their forms set up.”
After the concrete is poured today, workers will likely begin catching up on some other work associated with the project.
“I’ve heard they’re going to drop back to restore everything, get it all graded and seeded. They’re also going to be installing as much drainage pipe as possible,” said Rees.
After that work is done, the project’s contractor - Bleigh Construction - will decide what to do next.
“They might go ahead and take this on down to Pioneer Trail and finish one more segment this fall. They just have to assess the weather. It would be nice to get down to Pioneer Trail,” said Rees.
The decision to push forward or not will take into consideration both temperature and precipitation forecasts, according to Rees.
“It’s not so much the warmth, although it does need to be above freezing when they pour the concrete,” he said. “Dry weather is what we need ... no rain until after the concrete is poured and set up.”
Rees would not want to see the next section of pavement torn out and then left for the winter.
“We want that (West Ely Road) to be accessible and completely open over the winter,” he said. “We would be fairly disappointed if we don’t have that so people can drive back and forth all winter long.”
Even if the decision is made to not put any new pavement in this fall, work will not stop in the area.
“They can catch up with all their drainage work, lay all the storm-sewer pipe and that’s on all sectors of the street,” said Rees.
The entire West Ely project is expected to be finished by the end of September 2010.
