You name it, you can probably find it for sale on eBay, a popular online auction Web site. Included in the lengthy list of items for sale this week was an airplane hangar door that could prove useful at Hannibal Regional Airport (HRA).
John McCoy informed members of the Hannibal Airport Advisory Board that a 58-foot by 16-foot hangar door had been up for sale, but did not move during the designated sale time which expired Wednesday.
Mike Barron, manager of HRA, believes the door would be perfect for a hangar whose doorway needs to be enlarged.
“They built a 60-foot wide building and put a 40-foot wide door on it,” he said. “The wingspans of most planes, other than the small singles, are much wider than that. We have no way of getting business-type aircraft under cover for people.”
The aluminum door is currently attached to a hangar in Farmington, which is being torn down to make way for a new airport taxiway.
“It’s a rarity to find these doors on the U.S. market. It hardly ever happens. This is an unusual opportunity,” said Barron.
Making the door even more appealing is its price - $12,500. That price, which reportedly includes the cost of shipping, is approximately half the expense of a new door, according to Barron.
“If we’re going to buy a door new, we were looking at a one-piece door because we can actually get them a little cheaper and they’re less maintenance throughout the years. However, if somebody throws a door at us at half price we can afford to do a little maintenance in the future,” he said.
