Teams last played each other in 2009

The Class 4, District 4 crown will be on the line Friday night when the 8-3 Hannibal Pirates travel to St. Peters to play the 9-2 Ft. Zumwalt East Lions.

"It should be a good high school football game," said Hannibal Head Football Coach Mark St. Clair, whose team won the only other meeting between the two schools in 2009 by a score of 37-12.

Thus far in district play neither of the district's top two seeds have been challenged. The second-seeded Pirates opened with a 56-0 win over St. Charles. Last week HHS throttled Westminster Christian Academy 49-14.

The top-seeded Lions won 42-14 over Warrenton during week one of district play. Last week Ft. Zumwalt East shut out Priory 31-0.

The Lions' offense centers around senior quarterback Ben Watson, who ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Priory.

"East will run a one-back spread and try to keep the ball in the QB's hands," St. Clair said. "Their offense revolves around him running and passing."

The Pirate offense must be ready for different looks.

"On defense they play multiple fronts and run very well," St. Clair said.

According to the HHS coach, who said his team had a good week of preparation, the keys to victory haven't changed much from last week or two weeks ago.

"We need to play a focused game and pay attention to details," St. Clair said. "Winning the line of scrimmage will again be the key for this game."

The Lions are a perfect 7-0 at home this season. Following a week two setback against the Jays in Jefferson City the Pirates have won three consecutive road tests.

The contest is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
