Claudia Nichols will represent Hannibal High School in the state cross country meet after placing 17th in last Saturday's sectional competition.

"Claudia qualified for the state cross country meet because of her very nice race at the sectional meet," Coach Charlie Newland said. "Claudia did not let the magnitude of the sectional meet affect her. She was racing against the top athletes in her district and the top athIetes from District 3. I was proud of the way that she raced. She ran consistently and passed athletes as the race progressed." In turning in a time of 21:03, Nichols overcame some adversity during the race. "Claudia was in very good position throughout the race although there was a mishap at the second mile. Claudia slipped and fell down hard," Newland said. "I was concerned because a young athlete can let a fall affect them adversely. Fortunately, she was able to respond and actually improved her position after the fall, ultimately earning all-sectional honors." The girls Class 4 state meet will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, Oak Hills golf course in Jefferson City. "This week will be a chance for Claudia to rest and get prepared for the state meet. It is quite an honor to be able to qualify for a state championship. I'm sure she is going to represent HHS well," Newland said.
