Mike Riney and his wife, Debbie, did not mind spending their 46th wedding anniversary at the American Legion Post 55 in Hannibal, because it was on Oct. 13 during a book sale that will benefit the American Legion Baseball Program, which he has led for the past 30 years.

Mike Riney also has been in charge of the book sales for 25 years.

Three people won drawings for free books on Oct. 12: Trudy Robertson, Ellen Dotzert and Kathy Gilbert Rzysko.

With tables of books and other donated forms of entertainment spread on tables throughout the American Legion Hall, the Rineys reported the books will be boxed, and sales will be continued periodically during the next year.

The baseball program also benefits from rib-eye and pork steak meals. The next will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Legion Hall. The rib-eye steak meals will be $12 and the pork steak meals, $10, including potato salad, baked beans, roll, dessert and drink. Children age 6 and under will be served for $5.

The public is invited to meet the baseball players and coaches at the dinner. Carry-outs are offered, and orders of four or more meals will be delivered.

Mike Riney is very proud of the baseball teams, which often play in championship games.

Three American Legion teams compete. They are signed up by age, the A Team, beginning at age 13, the AA Team, 17 and under, and the AAA Team, 19 and under.

“The A team was the 2018 District Champion and went to state for the fourth year in a row,” Riney said.

Members of the 2018 A team were Kegan Birk, Tristan Charlton, Charles Culp IV, Gary Culp, Drake Dudley, Jack Kirby, Brody Lehenbauer, Garrett Lillard, Hunted Scrogin, Mason Tharp, LaTrell Wright and Caleb Young. Their coaches were Charley Culp, Eric Dudley, Gary Culp and Richard Tharp.

The 2018 AA team (17 and under) members were Logan Astorino, John Clubine, Mavryk Comley, Parker Elliott, Casey Hathaway, Robert Lowder IV, Kadin Morgan, Caleb Peters, Cameron Voepel, Trevor Wade, Jameson White, Matthew Wilson and Tyler Wilson. Coaches were Mike Elliott and Jim Astorino.
