Eleven-year-old Tyler Janus gets a big hug from his father, Tech Sgt. Ryan Janus, before the Shades of Blue concert Saturday, Sept. 1 at American Legion Post 370 in Louisiana, Mo. Janus, the piano player for the band, had been on the road all week, Tyler and the rest of his family — mother Melanie and siblings Sam, Ella and Margo — made the trip from Shiloh, Ill., as a surprise. Sam and Tyler spent much of the evening dancing to the sounds of the military professional musicians from Scott Air Force Base. The group performed a 90-minute concert for more than 110 people as part of the Pike County Bicentennial celebration. The concert featured vocal and instrumental numbers such as "That Old Black Magic," "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" and a salute to the armed forces, encompassing composers from Count Basie to Sting.
