To enhance pedestrian safety at the Hannibal Middle School a new sidewalk is being built behind the building.

While the start of the 2018-19 school year is still weeks away, projects have been undertaken throughout the Hannibal public school district in anticipation of the start of classes.

One such project began Wednesday morning at the middle school where work on a new sidewalk commenced on the building’s east side.

The purpose behind the project is to increase pedestrian safety, according to Rich Stilley, business manager for the school district.

“This new sidewalk is being constructed to allow students and staff an opportunity to walk from the Hannibal Middle School’s north parking lot to other parts of the campus and not be in the line of traffic,” he said.

A good deal of preparation work took place on Wednesday, including earthwork and the placing of rock to provide a base for the concrete when it is poured.
