George Wesley Thompson, age 88, of Georgetown, Texas, peacefully passed away Monday, April 9, 2018.

Formerly of Kansas City, Mo. and St. Paul, Minn., George was born in Hannibal in 1929. He graduated from the University Of Missouri School Of Mines, Rolla, attaining a degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Thompson served as an officer in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (now part of NOAA), before his successful decades-long career in the railroad industry. His accomplishments there resulted in selection as Vice President of Burlington Northern Railroad, and later, President of Kansas City Terminal Railroad prior to his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bette Lou (Bird) Thompson in 2006; and his brother James Thompson.

He is survived by his sons, George Thompson Jr. and fiancee Elaine, of Hampton Va.; Robert Thompson and wife Maddie of Spooner, Wisc.; Stephen Thompson and fiancee Marlene, of Alliance, Neb.; David Thompson and fiancee Laura, of Hudson, Wisc.; and daughter Kathleen Thompson of Austin, Texas. Grandchildren include Kiley Ann Thompson, of Omaha, Neb.; and Kendahl Marie Thompson, of Atlanta, Ga. George also is survived by three great-grandchildren of Kiley Thompson. Of special note was his long-term friend, Ms. Jean Anderson of Georgetown, Texas, who provided comfort and happiness during the last 10 years of his life.

The family’s greatest appreciation goes to staff and congregation of San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, Georgetown, Texas, for the loving support they have provided during the last few years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, 5404 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas, 78633.

There will not be a Memorial Service, but rather a Celebration of Life for immediate family members at a later date.
