A Hannibal man who allegedly punched an 11-year-old in the face has been charged with a felony.

Damien J. Gray, of Hannibal, was charged with a Class D felony of child abuse on Tuesday, April 10.

The incident took place in Hannibal on April 9.

Gray allegedly got into a vehicle with a family as they were preparing to retrieve clothing from a relative’s home. It is unclear, according to court paperwork, how Gray knew the family. In the course of preparing to leave, Gray and the 11-year-old victim exchanged words, after which Gray punched the child with a closed fist below the right eye.

Gray allegedly told the child’s mother, “You’re just going to let him disrespect me like that? So yeah, I hit him.”

Gray faces a range of punishment of up to 7 years in prison, a year in jail and/or a fine up to $10,000. He was issued a bond of $25,000 cash or surety.

“An accusation of an adult male punching a young boy in the face is a serious matter,” said Marion County Prosecuting Attorney David Clayton. “Fortunately, the child did not sustain life threatening injuries. Gray has an extensive criminal history mostly from the Chicago area.”

Gray is housed in the Marion County Jail.
