Hannibal and Bushnell- Prairie City High Schools to Compete in Quarterfinal Match on WGEM Feb. 3

John Wood Community College and WGEM will launch the 28th season of the Academic Challenge Quiz Bowl Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3, with the competition’s first match between Hannibal High School and Bushnell Prairie City High School airing at 6:30 p.m. on WGEM NBC. 

The match will be rebroadcast on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 10:30 a.m. on WGEM NBC and again at 9 p.m. on WGEM FOX.

The Academic Challenge features 16 schools from the tri-state region competing in 15 matches.  Seven contests will be broadcast, including the championship match.  The tournament is scheduled to air through March 18. The broadcast schedule for the other quarterfinal matches includes: February 10 and 11, North Shelby High School versus Quincy Notre Dame High School; February 18 and 19, Clark County High School versus Hannibal High School; and February 24 and 25 Quincy High School versus Scotland County High School.

The host of this year’s tournament is WGEM Sports Director Ben Marth.  The series is co-sponsored by John Wood Community College and WGEM-TV. 

Members of the Hannibal team include: Gavin Booth, Donovan Mefford, Ruby Roisum, Clayton Sims, JC Bryant, Xavier Pociask, Jessica Stinson and Coby Rickey. The Hannibal team is coached by Amy Sternke.

Judges for the 2018 challenge include JWCC faculty members Melissa Knapp, assistant professor of mathematics; Mike Terry, interim dean of arts and sciences; and Dr. Randy Wolfmeyer, assistant professor of engineering.
