John Ferguson and Janet Day were married Dec. 23, 1967, in Springfield, Mo.

They have been Hannibal residents since 1981.

John graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. He did further studies at the University of Missouri Kansas City, Central Missouri State University, and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He taught Elementary and Junior High String Orchestra in Carthage, Mo., and the Hickman Mills School District in the Kansas City area.

John then served as a Minister of Music for 35 years, retiring from New London Baptist Church in 2010. John is an accomplished violinist and continues to play in the Quincy Symphony Orchestra and various ensembles in the area. John also is an Adjunct Instructor at Hannibal-LaGrange University where he teaches stringed instrument lessons and conducts the Hannibal Area String Orchestra. He is a member of the Missouri Music Men, a men’s choir made up of Worship Leaders from all over the state.

Janet also completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education at Southwest Missouri State University in 1967 and went on to receive her Master of Arts in Education from the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1970.

Janet taught elementary vocal music in Grandview and substitute taught while their two children were young. She then later worked as an Assistant Professor of Education at Hannibal-LaGrange University. Janet retired from HLGU in 2011 after teaching there for 25 years.

Janet, also an accomplished musician, plays piano for church services at New London Baptist Church and is a member of the Mark Twain Chorale along with her husband. Janet is also an active member of Evening Etude, which is affiliated with the National Federation of music clubs and BR chapter of PEO.

John and Janet are enjoying their retirement by traveling and spending time with their family and friends. Over the years, they have traveled all over the United States (46 total from Alaska to Florida!) and recently to Israel, Greece and Nicaragua. Janet plays bridge weekly and is active with a ladies’ exercise group at the local YMCA. John and Janet enjoy visiting their children and grandchildren, playing cards with their friends, and are active members of their church in New London.
