MoDOT personnel were cutting brush and removing dead trees from along U.S. 61, north of Hannibal, on Thursday morning.

Missouri Department of Transportation workers were performing maintenance along the southbound lanes of U.S. 61, from Diamond Boulevard/Route 168 to Route W on Thursday.

“They are cutting down and removing the dead trees in that stretch, plus they are thinning it up by removing a lot of the brush,” said Marisa Ellison, a MoDOT spokesperson, adding the work there could carry over to Friday.

There is more to the work that just making that area more aesthetically pleasing.

“This helps open up the area to allow more sunlight on that stretch of the highway, which keeps it warmer and helps remove snow and ice if or when we get some,” said Ellison.

Similar work has occurred on U.S. 61 between Hannibal and the Salt River.
