Industrial technology teacher Michael Mann portrayed 20-year-old Kaylee Quant during a poverty simulation program Wednesday at Hannibal Middle School sponsored by the not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC). As Quant, Mann told NECAC Macon County Service Coordinator Terri Laughlin that he didn’t have all of the money needed to pay the daycare bill for one-year-old daughter, Clarice. Until the fee was paid, Clarice could not attend daycare. Dozens of teachers got a glimpse during the three-hour program of what many students and their parents go through every day. Unexpected medical bills, evictions and facility closings forced participants to adapt in order to get by. Poverty simulations are held throughout Northeast Missouri and can be scheduled by calling NECAC at 573-324-6633.
