The Clarksville Bicentennial Committee hosted award-winning author and journalist Brent Engel's presentation of "The Second 100 Years: Voices From Our Past and Present" on Nov. 12 at Clarksville Christian Church. The free event was the second of two commemorating the community's 200th anniversary in 2017. Engel incorporated additional speakers to discuss the economic, religious, social and environmental impacts of the last 10 decades. Topics included churches, World War II, the apple industry, the Skylift, the artisan community and flooding. Also speaking or providing words to be read were Martha Hipes, Nathalie Pettus, Dale Miller, Erin and Bud Garrison, and Mayor Jo Anne Smiley. Additional materials or research came from Dr. Debra Duvall Peppers, Linda Blakey, John Andrews, Clarksville Library and books, newspapers and periodicals. Debra Crank-Lewis, a history professor at St. Charles Community College, gave the first in the lecture series last April.
