New culvert pipe was being installed on an outer road, next to northbound U.S. 61, in Ralls County on Monday morning.

Sawyer’s Drive, which is the outer road to northbound U.S. 61 in Ralls County, was closed Monday so that Missouri Department of Transportation personnel could perform culvert work.

The project, which was taking place almost across from Injun Joe Campground in Ralls County, began at 7 a.m. It was expected to be completed in a day, but could wrap on Tuesday, according to Marisa Ellison of MoDOT.

“Replacing culverts is routine for MoDOT,” said Ellison. “We have thousands of culverts across the northeast district. The life of a culvert just depends on many factors including weather, soil composition and usage.

“Culverts are typically steel tubes which vary in size.”
