Hannibal Board of Public Works personnel were digging four holes inside the fenced lot of the Hannibal Jaycees Thursday.

While their exact purpose was not immediately known, by mid morning Thursday the Hannibal Jaycees were the owners of four holes at the site the organization owns on Lyon Street.

The digging was being performed by a two-man crew from the Hannibal Board of Public Works (HBPW).

Each of the holes were being dug to an approximate depth of 9 feet. In one instance the hole went deep enough to reach the water table. The sight of water trickling into the hole did not surprise one of the HBPW workers who pointed out the close proximity of both the Mississippi River and Bear Creek.

It was anticipated that the digging would be completed within a couple of hours.
