The Heartland Resources, Inc. Foster Grandparent Program Advisory Council (FGPAC) met on July 20, 2017 at Douglass Community Services Community Room in Hannibal. Five council members, the program director and two guests attended the meeting. In the absence of the President and Vice-President, Linda Schmitz, Secretary, presided at the meeting.

Special guests at the meeting were two Hannibal Early Head Start Managers, Michelle Rupert of the Johnson Street Facility and Cindy Combs of the Clinic Road Facility. They each spoke about their programs as did Sarah Tonui, a council member who is also the site leader of the Johnson Street Head Start. Foster grandparents that serve at each site are important to the success of the programs. As a speaker shared, one of her foster grandparents feels the center is her family and people there feel the same love for her.

In the Director’s Report, W.T. Johnson talked about the Foster Grandparent Recognition Luncheon that was held on June 19 in Hannibal. At the luncheon and at the council meeting, a poem was read about being a foster grandparent. It was written by Dottie Tonnies, a foster grandparent at Highland Elementary School.

A fact sheet about the program was distributed at the council meeting. It showed that during the grant year that ended on June 30, the foster grandparents gave a total of 24,100 hours. There are currently 26 foster grandparents with several additional applicants.

The foster grandparent program is currently funded for year three of a grant. The director spoke some about current challenges and future goals of the program. On Aug. 1 and Aug. 3 there were in-services and physicals in Hannibal for the foster grandparents.

The next FGPAC meeting is scheduled for Nov. 16, at the Heartland Resources, Inc. Conference Room in Ewing, Mo.
