Hannibal Rural Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched at 2:54 a.m., Saturday, July 29, to the report of a structure fire at 13532 Thornberry Road, New London.

Hannibal Rural Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched at 2:54 a.m., Saturday, July 29, to the report of a structure fire at 13532 Thornberry Road, New London. An area resident had reported smoke in the area of Thornberry Road and a Ralls County Deputy found the double wide trailer totally involved in fire.

The first firefighters to arrive found fire had consumed the west end of the structure with the fire coming through the roof. Two pumpers and two tankers were used at the incident and firefighters were able to save a nearby garage and vehicles in the driveway. It took firefighters a little more than 30 minutes to fully bring the fire under control.

The west end of the home was completely destroyed by the fire, the east end of the home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.

The home was owned by Archie Whittaker Sr. and Gail Gibbons and was also home to three children. The family was on vacation at the time of the fire and were not in town. Firefighters were on scene for about four hours, the cause of the fire was not able to be determined. There were no injuries reported.
