The Palmyra area will be bustling with activity through Aug. 5 with events for the Marion County Fair.

The annual event officially kicked off on Thursday night with an archery competition, but things will really get busy on Saturday, July 29.

One of the most anticipated events is the Demolition Derby, sponsored by the Palmyra Jaycees. The well-attended event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 4 at the arena at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

Over $12,000 in prizes will be handed out at that event alone in at least three different classes.

The arena will be home to several of the events throughout the week, including tractor pulls, supercross races and more. Admission to the arena varies from day to day and costs anywhere from $5 to $15. Children under 12 are free to arena events.

A parade will kick off festivities on Saturday, July 29. The route takes visitors through downtown Palmyra.

Another highlight is the Miss Marion County pageant, scheduled for 7 p.m., Saturday July 29. Reigning Queen Amanda Lewis will hand off her crown to the new Miss Marion County, along with contests for Pre-Junior Miss and Junior Miss. Those contests begin at 4 p.m.
