A correctional officer was attacked with a homemade weapon on Wednesday at the Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green, Mo.

A correctional officer was attacked with a homemade weapon on Wednesday at the Northeast Correctional Center in Bowling Green, Mo.

According to KHQA, the Courier-Post's news-gathering partners, the staff member was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The victim is alert and is in stable condition according to a state level spokesman.

"An institutional lockdown has been initiated to ensure the safety of the staff and offender population, and it is still in effect,” David Owen with the Missouri Department of Corrections told KHQA. “Offender privileges are limited during a lockdown and offenders are restricted to their cells."

Owen says, "The safety and security of the public, staff and offenders is the highest priority of the department at its correctional centers. Any incident of violence against staff or offenders is taken seriously and reviewed to make sure all the appropriate actions are taken."

This incident is under investigation.
