A major announcement regarding an expansion of facilities at Hannibal Regional is likely in the near future, according to a Hannibal Regional official.

Wendy Harrington, who leads the Hannibal Regional Hospital Foundation and also serves as Vice-President of Development for Hannibal Regional, advised the Northeast Missouri Economic Development Council during its recent July meeting that an announcement was likely within the next few weeks following an upcoming meeting of the Hannibal Regional board.

While she acknowledged the upcoming announcement would detail a “major expansion,” she declined to elaborate regarding what areas of its healthcare offerings might be impacted.

Hannibal Regional Health System, which opened its hospital facility adjacent to Shinn Lane in 1993, is no stranger to large undertakings. A little less than a decade ago a $22 million expansion was completed at the hospital that included a new emergency room, a heart institute, occupational and hyperbaric medicine facilities, a critical decisions unit and medical office space.

In the building inspector’s office at City Hall, Joey Burnham has little to say regarding the plans for Hannibal Regional.

“I just know it’s going to be big, that’s all I know,” he said. “We should be getting some plans in September on that. As far as right now I can’t tell you what we’re going to have yet.”

After the plans are submitted, the project is approved and construction begins, Burnham will have little to do with the project until it is all but completed.

“For a project like that they have their own inspectors. We’ll just do finals. We’ll go out and do little electrical stuff and final inspections. But as far as the major structure of it, they have their own inspectors who do that, third-party inspectors,” he said.

While plans for the health system’s upcoming facilities expansion aren’t expected for over a month, Burnham has been finalizing permits for another project on the healthcare campus.

“They’re doing a little renovation around a dock (at the hospital) and doing some parking lot expansion,” he said.
