Workers were moving dirt along southbound U.S. 61, just south of Hannibal, Thursday in an area where a turn lane will be added.

A $4 million highway improvement project got underway earlier this week just south of Hannibal on U.S. 61.

On Thursday, heavy equipment was being utilized next to the highway’s southbound lanes.

“They are doing the prep work in that area for the right turn lane that is going to be built at Route HH. They are building up the embankment,” said Marisa Ellison, communication manager for MoDOT’s northeast district. “This is one of several turn lanes that is being built as part of the project.”

The contractor, Magruder Paving of Troy, will also be doing resurfacing.

“There will be some night work eventually on parts of the project,” said Ellison.
