When Brent and Linda Newman started their fireworks business in 1991, their youngest daughter joined them at the age of one, in her playpen beneath the red-and-white tent. This summer, the Newmans' two daughters, Andrea Dieckman and Ashley Newman, will soon visit to help their parents during the bustling days leading up to July 4. And although their youngest daughter isn't as enamored with fireworks as her sister and parents, her fiance loves them — and her father jumped at the chance to set up a special display for them.

“I love syncing fireworks to music, so that's what she was wanting me to do for the wedding,” he said.

Newman's passion for fireworks culminates in the finales he sets up for customers, which include various multi-shot “cakes” designed to fire in series after lighting a single fuse. He said the popular displays allow everyone to sit down and enjoy the show, instead of running around and lighting different items.

Newman also enjoys video editing and recording, and he shares recordings of finales and all the items he sells to ensure customers get what they want. He showed a colorful video of “Ghosts in a Mine” which follows a blazing “mine” effect with a cluster of white ghost-like displays that seem to descend the mine.

“When I was younger and buying fireworks, you didn't really know what it did, you just bought it, and you didn't know what it did until you got home,” he said. “Maybe you didn't like it and you thought you wasted your money. Well, I don't like that for a customer, so these cakes that cost $15, $20, $30, $40 — I'd hate for them to get home and not like what they just bought.”
