A broken water valve on Maple Street, near Church Street, was being repaired by a five-man crew of Hannibal Board of Public Works personnel on Wednesday morning.

According to a resident in the neighborhood the mini-gusher appeared Tuesday afternoon.

BPW workers were initially looking for a shutoff valve to the leaking pipe near Maple Street and Broadway. However, despite the use of a metal detector the shut-off valve could not be found.

“I guess we’ll have to work on it ‘hot,’” said a BPW worker, meaning repairs would be undertaken with water still flowing to the broken valve.

As of Wednesday morning a boil order had not been issued for that area.
