David and Brandy Elzea face multiple charges related to abuse of children
A Monroe County husband and wife face charges of child abuse and neglect.
In addition, the husband, David Kevin Elzea, faces numerous counts of domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm. His wife, Brandy Elzea, also faces charges of sexual abuse of a minor child under the age of 14. David Elzea is being held in the Monroe County jail in lieu of a $40,000 cash-only bond, while Brandy Elzea, who was arrested on May 2, is being held on a $75,000 cash bond.
According to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Department report, deputies were called to the Elzea home in rural Monroe County on Jan. 18, after a call from the Monroe County Children’s Division to investigate the parents based on a call to the child abuse hotline. A sheriff’s deputy reported that during an interview, he was told of several alleged incidents of abuse by David Elzea.
He had already been arrested and charged with domestic abuse several days earlier. On the day a deputy was called to the house, it was alleged that David Elzea grabbed a shotgun and threatened to shoot his wife. It was reported that the incident was witnessed by several of their children. Elzea, the Sheriff’s report stated, was convicted in August 1983 on second-degree burglary charges and did not have the right to possess a firearm. The shotgun used in the alleged incident was seized by the deputy.
During the interview, his wife related other alleged incidents of being confronted by her husband with a firearm. Sheriff’s deputies say that after Elzea was read his Miranda rights, he admitted to “accidently” discharging a firearm in the house, and during a search of the house, deputies found evidence of a bullet hole in a wall near the ceiling, placing his children in danger, said the report.
“The trajectory of the slug appeared to be in close proximity to the boys’ upstairs bedroom causing a substantial risk of injury or death to the children in the home,” said the Sheriff’s Department report.
Additionally, the Sheriff’s report outlines allegations of years of abuse, including Elzea allegedly breaking his hand while striking his daughter on the head, choking his wife with a telephone charger, allegations of choking his 5-year-old daughter for spilling her noodles on the floor “until her eyes bulged” and allegations of striking his children frequently with a board that he kept under his bed, with the report adding, “At least two of the children reported Elzea throwing the board at them on at least one occasion.”
As the investigation unfolded, the deputies said they uncovered numerous other allegations of abuse by Elzea against his children, including chasing a child around his yard with a car and later the same evening, he attempted, deputies allege, to enter the same son’s room with a butcher knife.
Deputies allege that Brandy Elzea knew of the abuse against her children and did not report the alleged abuse.
“Brandy Elzea neglected to report or seek assistance for her children, exposing them to years of physical and mental abuse at the hands of their father, David Elzea,” deputies allege in their report. “Her failure to protect the children exposed them to conditions conducive to ongoing abuse.”
The sexual abuse charged, the Sheriff’s report states, is related to allegations of ongoing sexual abuse by their oldest son on his younger siblings, allegedly assaulting one as many as 50 times over the course of a year. The children told deputies their parents did nothing to stop the abuse.
“All of the children in the household were told not to talk about (the abuse) or welfare would come and take them away,” reported the deputies.
David Elzea face a hearing on Thursday, June 1 in Monroe County, while Brandy Elzea faces a preliminary hearing on June 6.
