About 50 people helped the Monroe County Historical Society celebrate the publication of its book, “The World War I Soldiers of Monroe, County, Missouri,” in a ceremony on the Monroe County Courthouse on Thursday.

The book was released on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. declaring war on Germany.

More than 600 Monroe County residents – 20 of whom died - answered the call of war. Their names are etched on the walls of the west entryway into the Monroe County Courthouse. General of the Army John J. Pershing, who commanded the American Expeditionary Force, grew up in Laclede, about 80 miles from Paris.
