Independence Police arrested a man who fled an attempted traffic stop early Monday and drove the wrong way on Missouri 291.
According to police, a patrol officer had attempted a traffic stop at M-291 and Gudgell before dawn Monday when the suspect vehicle sped away southbound in the northbound lanes of M-291. Per department policy, police did not pursue but kept the vehicle in sight.
South of Interstate 70, where M-291 becomes I-470, police used stop strips and the driver turned back north and crashed into a swampy area between the Little Blue River and EPIC Church off the east side of I-470. A K-9 unit then tracked the suspect. The case remains under investigation.
• Independence Police say last week's shooting at Highleah Town Houses on the east side and the homicide last month at South Cedar Avenue remain open investigations.
The Highleah shooting on Jan. 31, at the 1800 block of Dover Fork off Pembroke Crescent East, is considered an aggravated assault. A young male victim was rushed from the scene to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The fatal shooting on South Cedar Avenue, between Truman and Winner roads, claimed the life of 41-year-old William Elliott. Two people of interest in that investigation have been located and are not considered suspects, though police are still looking for Ralph Mitchell as a person of interest.
