With Saturday’s temperature expected to reach into the mid 80s in Northeast Missouri, news that the Hannibal Aquatic Center is opening for the summer Saturday, May 29, will likely make a number of people happy.
The pool will officially open its doors at 1 p.m.
“It’s always exciting,” said Ronnie Ferrel, pool manager for the parks and recreation department. “I’ve been doing this for a lot of years, but I still love opening the doors on the first day. People want to be the first one in.”
Prep work at the facility has been under way for over a week.
“In the last week they’ve been putting the finishing touches on the pool,” said Chris Atkinson, parks department director. “They’ve also been finishing the (lifeguard’s) training and certification so that everyone will be certified when the pool opens.”
According to Ferrel, many lifeguards from last year’s award-winning group return.
“The kids have experience which makes it easy for me,” he said.
