The Hannibal Huck Finn Shipping Center was nearly filled with historic and special interest vehicles Saturday evening, Sept. 12. Each year for the past 19 years the Loafers Car Club has hosted a reunion cruise-in that draws a large variety of vehicles from a 100-mile radius. There is no entry fee, no judging but lots of free door prizes as well as cash prizes for longest distance, club participation, and muffler rap. Many spectators also attend to view the wide variety of vehicles and talk to owners.
This Saturday night event found Ford Model A Fords, Jaguars, Corvettes, Rat Rods, custom pick-up trucks, and a plethora of Ford, MoPar, and General Motors cars from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Many were modified for high performance, others appeared exactly as show room stock. A special display of a historic modified hearse complete with fake monster cadaver was on display. The hearse was pulling a unique trailer made from a casket. The owners of this display drove in from Springfield, Ill. The Loafers Club members are grateful for the many attendees’ that made donations for H.I.S. KIDS as they enjoyed DJ music from the 50’s and 60’s.
The Loafers Car Club is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of giving back to the community while preserving and enjoying historical automobiles. The public is invited to attend, at no charge, the main events of the year. Events include the April through October Hot Dog Cruise-in held in the Steamboat Bend Shopping Center the first Saturday evening each month and is sponsored by County Market and AutoZone, the annual Car Show held in May in downtown Hannibal, and the Reunion Cruise-in held each September in the Huck Finn Shopping Center. Donations received during these events are used for various charitable causes such as H.I.S. K.I.D.S., scholarships for two graduating high school students who are planning to continue their education in an automotive related field, as well as donations to other needy causes.
