Quincy Medical Group offers individuals with Parkinson’s disease a unique therapy to keep their voice and speech strong.

LSVT LOUD is the first scientifically documented program for treating voice and speech disorders for people with Parkinson’s disease and other similar neurological conditions. LSVT LOUD improves vocal loudness, intonation, and voice quality of individuals with Parkinson’s disease by focusing on one simple target: increasing vocal loudness.

Kelsey Vonderhaar, QMG Speech Therapist and Certified LSVT LOUD Clinician, said individuals can receive the therapy at any stage of Parkinson’s, but starting early is suggested. “Recommendations are to start the therapy at the earliest stages of the disease. Even if you have just been diagnosed and you’re not showing many symptoms with voice or communication difficulties, it’s important to get started.”

Quincy Medical Group began offering the LSVT LOUD program in February of 2016. Vonderhaar said the treatment program is intensive, but the therapeutic improvements have been documented to last up to two years. Research studies have also documented the effectiveness of this therapy in improving disordered articulation, diminished facial expression, and impaired swallowing.

In August, QMG will begin to offer LOUD CROWD. LOUD CROWD will be a chance for individuals who have completed LSVT LOUD to gather together for support, encouragement, and motivation. “The group is designed as a follow-up maintenance program to help individuals maintain progress they made during the treatment,” explained Vonderhaar.
