New London, MO —

Helen Cornelius can’t wait to sing for a hometown crowd, even if she has a few butterflies.
Cornelius, a Hannibal native, joined Ron Leake of the Ralls County Historical Society to announce plans Tuesday for the 150th anniversary of the Ralls County Courthouse July 22-27.
“It’s going to be wonderful,” Cornelius said. “It’s always a little more nerve-racking when you’re singing where you grew up. You want to do well for them.”
Cornelius will perform Saturday, July 26. The concert will include hits she’s had on her own, as well as selections she made popular with Jim Ed Brown.
“It’s kind of a variety,” she said.
Cornelius may even do a special number titled “Missouri.” The Nashville-based singer used to do the song on tour, but hasn’t performed it in years.
“It’s a great song for our area,” she said.
Leroy Van Dyke will open the show. Cornelius said she and Van Dyke frequently do shows together, so their bands are familiar with each other’s styles.
Thousands of people from around the nation are expected for the six-day celebration, and the concert will be a big draw. Both Cornelius and Van Dyke list it on their websites.
Cornelius said the “character” of the courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was important in her decision to do the concert.
“This is special,” she said. “It’s history. I feel fortunate that I’m part of it.”
The historical society is equally happy.
“We feel very fortunate to have her,” Leake said. “People from here can be world-class entertainers.”
Other sesqui events include a baby show, parade, queen contest, antique tractor pull, trial re-enactments, horse pulls, spelling bee, quilt show and community church service.
The festival is being funded with private donations.
