Hannibal, MO —

I completed a phone conversation with Eric Churchwell, superintendent of schools of Palmyra R-I School District.I placed that call to strongly protest the school district making the high school parking lot available to BASF employees and also providing bus transportation to the BASF plant during the flood crises.
Churchwell was very pleasant in explaining that BASF was paying all costs related to providing the bus transportation and that he and the school board felt it to be the right thing to do during this emergency.
I want to remind the school board that the failure of BASF to pay their school tax will create an emergency for many senior citizens and families who are already fighting a losing battle with living costs, let alone the increase in their school tax to compensate for the BASF action. There will be many who will suffer monetary loss as a result of this flood, yet their taxes will be due anyway.
In my opinion BASF ceased to be a part of the community when they took the action they did and are not deserving of any consideration as long as they continue on the path they took. It is not too late for them to do the right thing and pay their taxes, like the rest of us, and become apart of the community again.
