Ewing, MO —

A new position in the Lewis County C-1 School District is having an impact. That news was shared last week with the members of the district’s board of education.
Kirt Malone reported on the preliminary impact the new position of math coach has had at Highland Elementary School. According to Malone the position is patterned after the reading coach model. Malone said the program gathers its strength from having a “coach” who oversees the success of the HES math curriculum. He added that the concept is gaining strength as more teachers see the benefit of the program.
Debbie Miller is the district’s elementary school math coach.
In other business:
• Larry Post reported on the Cougar PRIDE Plan. He told the board that while some “tweaks” are still needed that its overall effect is promising.
Post said the overall goal of the program is to reinforce and reward positive behavior whether that means academics, behavior, attendance or discipline.
• Board members heard a report on the district’s School Improvement Plan for Highland High School. The plan was developed by a committee of school members who evaluated data from the recent MAP and annual yearly progress report. It has been submitted to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
• Recommendations from the School in Improvement Committee - Parents was shared along with the group’s contributions to curriculum and the Missouri Integrated Model project.
• Consolidated Contractors of Quincy, Ill., was hired to oversee backstop and fencing work at the new softball field at the high school.
• It was reported that most of the materials have been delivered for the district’s greenhouse. Work is expected to begin the week of Nov. 24.
• The school board approved the 2007-08 audit as submitted by Wade Stables.
