Mary Carter has lived far longer than most, and has learned an abundance of lessons along the way. Aug. 8, she celebrates her 105th birthday in her home on Spruce Street, surrounded by people who care about her, yet independent of influences contrary to her nature.
Miss Mary gained public note in January of 2006, when this newspaper published “Miss Mary: In her own words.” She described life from her perspective, and by doing so, she taught others the importance of life’s basics as they relate to quality of life and longevity.
This newspaper didn’t “whitewash” Miss Mary’s views on life or her vernacular; instead we told her story using her own crusty language and colorful words. To do any differently would have been an abomination. Miss Mary has earned the right to speak her peace. She has suffered the blows cast her way during a lifetime of prejudice and heartache. She came back stronger each time she fell, to live longer than those who transgressed against her. Her survival is a celebration of determination and her strong constitution.
Miss Mary is a cornerstone in a neighborhood suspected of drug and gang activity. She serves as an example of strength and endurance to those who will take the time to listen. She worked hard throughout her life, enduring more than her share of heartaches. Yet she kept working and kept living. She didn’t give up. She survived life’s wrath and garnered strength from the pain.
Today, in a world beset with hatred, violence and grief, Miss Mary survives. She loves Jesus, and she’s ready to go home whenever he calls.
She’s true to herself, and to her God, who has left her here for a reason. She teaches those who will listen about the importance of living life to its fullest, regardless of outside influences.
Happy birthday, Mary Carter, from those who have learned life lessons from you.
