Winners in John Wood Community College’s 2009 Creative Writing Contest have been announced.
The competition drew 113 entries, including 94 in the adult category and 19 in the youth category.
Serving as judges were Dr. Dierdre Fagan, assistant professor of English at Quincy University (Youth Poetry); Rodney Hart, reporter for The Quincy Herald-Whig (Youth Fiction and Non-fiction); Dr. Mary Ann Klein, retired professor of English at QU (Fiction); Dr. Don Schweda, retired professor of English at QU (Poetry); and Kelly Wilson, reporter for The Quincy Herald-Whig (Non-fiction).
Monetary prizes and certificates were awarded as follows:
Adult category:
• Fiction: First place – Barbara Erakko Taylor, Catonsville, Md., A Timeless Dance; second – Tony Concannon, Norwood, Mass., Tuna; third – T.L. Sherwood, Springville, N.Y., Coffee Would Be Good.
• Non-fiction: First place – Jan Sherbin, Cincinnati, Ohio, A Woman’s War; second – Kathy Morris, Philadelphia, Pa., Up From the Ashes; third – T.L. Sherwood, Springville, N.Y., The True Audacity of Hope.
• Non-rhyming Poetry: First place – Yvonne Meckfessel, Troy (Ill.), Unwrinkled Sheets; second – Joseph Newkirk, Quincy, Twilight at Puget Sound; third – Dwain Preston, Quincy, The Substitute.
• Traditional Rhyming Poetry: First place – Dwain Preston, Quincy, The Trees of My Life; second – Nicole L. Callahan, Fort Riley, Kan., Suffer the Little Children; third – Dwain Preston, Quincy, Don’t Rush Me.
• All Other Poetry Forms: First place – Shelley Connell, Ledgewood, N.J., The Non-Discriminate; second and third – Joseph Newkirk, Quincy, Forest Sounds and Sprigs Emerging Through Snow, respectively.
Youth category:
• Fiction/Non-fiction: First place – Chelsea Still, Mount Sterling, Ill., Sisterly Love; second – Danielle VanWinkle, Pearl, Ill., Remembered Today, Forgotten Tomorrow; third – Kellie Mast, Quincy – Death Reflections.
• Poetry: First place – Erin Sinnott, Saugerties, N.Y., Frost; second – Hallie Lang, Pittsfield, Ill., My Spring, Rainbows End; third – Erin Sinnott, Saugerties, N.Y., Poet’s Paradise.
