September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. According to Library Director Hallie Yundt Silver of the Hannibal Free Public Library, studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
The Hannibal library offers books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs, computers and multimedia materials. Most can be borrowed for home use simply by showing a library card. Library staff members are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests.
Cards from Hannibal Free Public Library are available free to city residents and people who live in Ralls County. Replacement cards cost $3. The library must charge a fee of $35 to other Marion County residents to help pay for their service. The library requires identification and proof of residency. Children below age 18 need the signature of a parent of guardian.
To celebrate sign-up month the library is giving a free book to every child age 12 and under who shows his or her library card to the staff in the Children’s Room. Children may apply for cards with their parents’ help and receive a free book on the same day. The book give-away will continue through Thursday, Sept. 16, or while supplies last. The books were donated to the Library by HNB Bank and WQEC.
The library’s special events include Preschool Story Times at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays; and the Saturday Read & Glue at 10:30 a.m. for children in kindergarten through second grade, with a longer story time and craft activity each week. Also, clubs and school classes may schedule tours and special story times. For more information, call Hannibal Free Public Library at (573) 221-0222 or visit the library at 200 S. 5th St.
